Pelvic and spinal pain is common during pregnancy, with up to 90% of pregnant women suffering from pain as a result of changes that occur over the course of fetal development. Many of these changes are due to chemical and hormonal fluctuations that allow relaxation of the supportive ligaments. This can aggravate pre-existing conditions as well as cause new symptoms to present. Together with postural changes this can cause pain in the neck, back and pelvis, buttocks, groin and legs.
The chiropractic drugless approach is ideally suited for pregnant women. Adjustments and prenatal massage can help with alleviating or reducing the symptoms listed above, premature contractions, morning sickness and can help prevent post-partum depression. Clinical studies have also revealed women who receive chiropractic care during their pregnancy tend to have easier and shorter labor and delivery comparative to women who do not receive this type of care.
If your pelvis is out of balance in any way, these ligaments may become torqued and twisted, and create an uneven pull on the uterus. This uterine tension may restrict the baby's movement and hamper eventual optimal positioning. Any compromised position for the baby throughout pregnancy may affect his or her development. Conditions such as torticollis (wry neck) may occur because a baby's space was cramped in utero. Uterine tension may also result in inhibiting the baby from getting into the best possible position for birthing.
The Webster technique is a specific chiropractic analysis, diversified adjustment and release of pelvic support ligament tension. The goal of the treatment is to reduce the effects of sacral subluxation and SacroIliac joint dysfunction and pelvic malpositioning. In so doing neuro-biomechanical function in the pelvis is improved.
The Obstetric literature has determined that correct positioning of the baby in-utero affects birth outcome and decreases the potential for undue stress to the baby's developing spine and nerve system. Obstetric literature has also determined the importance of normal pelvic neuro-biomechanics including uterine function and pelvic alignment for the prevention of dystocia (difficult birth). Chiropractic literature has determined the significance of sacral adjustments in normalizing pelvic neuro-biomenchanics, to assist with this ideal pelvic positioning.
Published studies have indicated that spinal and pelvic adjustments may reduce labor time. We work specifically with your spine and pelvis throughout pregnancy to restore a state of balance for mother and baby and create an environment for an easier, safer delivery. We offer specific spinal and pelvic analysis and adjustments for your special needs in pregnancy and for you and your baby's continued safety and comfort.

Dr. Cosh supports the midwifery philosophy for natural birthing, whenever possible. We have found women being co-treated with midwives approached their births with a greater sense of confidence and trust in their body’s ability to function normally. This on-going support from both practitioners is an incredible asset to the pregnant mother throughout pregnancy and in birth.
Make regular chiropractic care a part of your prenatal choices as well. Birth is an amazing experience and how you prepare throughout pregnancy along with who you work with will in fact lead to a more fulfilling birth experience.
After multiple years in practice we have found post-partum care to be critical in reducing residual lower back and pelvic pain, mid back and neck pain, due to nursing and carrying your baby; helping to reduce the likelihood of recurrence of these symptoms outside of pregnancy. Even if you were not able to receive care during your pregnancy, chiropractic adjustments and pelvic rebalancing maximizes your ability to meet the daily demands of being a new mother. Care received in this office will help balance you physically, emotionally and neurologically to help you be your best!
